About the ENG1 Medical
Please take a few minutes to read the information below and download the “What to expect at your medical” document, even if you have done many ENG1 medicals before as things do change from time to time. Please pay particular attention to the section on what to wear/bring to help ensure that your medical runs smoothly.
Your medical will take approximately 45 minutes.
Things to note before your medical;
-
Please avoid loud noise for 16 hours before the medical
-
Dental examinations form part of the seafarer examination and so it would be advised to attend your dentist before your medical if you have not been in the last year.If you have any particular dental issues it may be useful to ask your dentist for a letter stating that you are currently stable and fit to be at sea.
You will need to bring the following with you:
-
Photo ID – passport, driving licence or discharge book.
-
Previous ENG1 certificate if you have one.
-
If you wear contact lenses, please wear your glasses on the day but bring your contact lenses a long if you want to be classified fit with these as well. If you feel your eyesight has changed since your last medical then an opticians appointment before attending would be advised.
-
Please bring any information about medication, medical problems or hospital admissions since your last medical. You can ask your GP for a copy of your medical records free of charge. Downloading the NHS app can also give you access to basic details regarding medication etc.
-
High BLOOD PRESSURE readings taken during the medical are a common factor that can affect the outcome of an ENG1 medical. If you suffer from high blood pressure or you feel when seeing a doctor your blood pressure goes artificially high (white coat syndrome), then it would be advisable to bring a record of a recent within normal range reading (<140/90) from your own GP practice. You can simply ask your GP practice if they can carry one out and then ask for the reading to be printed off for your medical.
-
Clothes you are comfortable wearing to do a step test as this is sometimes needed as part of medical.
Please be prepared to provide a sample of urine for testing on arrival. The receptionist can provide you with a sample pot.
